another traveling mistake
another traveling mistake
In 1977 I began my 90 to 100 day trip around Europe from Wales to Yugoslavia, Greece and Egypt in early June.
The first travel mistake my two traveling friends and I made was relying on the timeliness of an airline flying from Miami to the Bahamas.
We had searched for the least expensive flights to Europe from Florida and found that flying a combined flight provided by Luxembourg Air and Air Bahamas would save us hundreds of dollars.
We all were living in Palm Beach County then. The two of them in Lake Worth and me in Boynton Beach. Our final plan was that they would drive to Boynton Beach and follow me to my office in Delray Beach a few miles south where I would leave my car behind the builder where I had my architectural office along with my developer/contractor business partner. Then I would ride with them to Miami to his parents home. From there his father would drive us to the Miami International Airport.
Sound like a simple workable plan.
His mother made us a wonderful traditional Chinese meal for our lunch.
Then his father drove us to the airport on time with an hour to spare for our first flight to the Bahamas.
What we hadn't checked was the latest weather report. A hurricane was headed towards Miami.
We arrived in plenty of time for our flight. But the storm delayed our 30 minute flight to the Bahamas over 3 hrs.
We had a waiting time at the Bahamas airport for our Luxembourg flight that should have been enough yet tight.
When our plane finally arrived at the Bahamas airport we rushed to get our luggage and ran to the gate. During our run we heard our names being announcement over the overhead speaker system over and over.
We arrived at the gate as soon as possible.
But we were told we were too late and our tickets and seats had been given away already to other passengers on the waiting list.
First trip to Europe and we missed over Atlantic flight because of a storm.
Now what.
The Luxembourg Air employees were very helpful. They had arranged for a taxi to take us to a beachfront hotel for the night and a return trip to the airport in plenty of time for the night flight to Luxembourg at 10 in the morning.
Plan Plan Plan but sometimes our Plans are not enough.
Weather happens.
